HOW DO VISUALLY CHALLENGED CAN READ OR WRITE? THE BRAILLE SYSTEM

Visually challenged people cannot see. The visual impairment can be curable and incurable.
The curable impairment either the cornea or the eye lens become opaque.

(i) The opaque cornea can be surgically replaced by a healthy donated cornea.

There are various non-profit organisation who work for donation of cornea. Aishwarya Rai supporting the eye donation movement.Any person or organization can become a member of Eye Bank Association of India and help strengthen the eye donation movement.

(ii) The opaque eye lens is surgically replaced by an artificial lens.

THE BRAILLE SYSTEM

In the case of permanent impairment, the image formed on the retina cannot be transmitted to the brain. Such people develop sensitivity towards sound and touch. Thus, visually challenged people use other senses to 'see' the world around.

Louis Braille developed this method so that visually impaired people could read using the sense of touch. This method called Braille, involve the use of special symbols  representing the alphabet and their combinations.

In this method, the text is printed on a thick sheet of paper using special symbols. These symbols consist of up to six dots two vertical rows of three dot each in a rectangular array. The dots are embossed and raised slightly above the surface of the paper.

Braille Cell- A rectangular array of raised dot is called Braille Cell.

A visually challenged person recognizes each letter by the position of dots in each cell.
